How to get more Google reviews

Updated 3 min read

Most happy customers never leave a review, not because they mind, but because nobody asked and it felt like effort. The fix is dull and effective: ask every time, at the right moment, and make it one tap. Here is how, and the rules that keep it honest.

The short version

  • Ask right after a good moment: a finished job, a paid bill, a problem solved.
  • Ask everyone, not only the customers you expect to be happy.
  • Make it one tap with a direct link or a QR code.
  • Never offer anything in exchange for a review.
  • Reply to the reviews you get. It encourages the next one.

Why more reviews help

Your rating and review count are the first thing many people see when they look you up. A steady flow of recent reviews tells them you are open, busy and cared for, and it gives them real detail about what to expect.

It also protects you. One unhappy review means much less when it sits among many, and a fair mix reads as more believable than a wall of five stars.

Get your direct review link

Google gives every verified business a link that opens the review box straight away, and a QR code for the same thing. Google itself suggests reminding customers to leave a review with that link or code. Anything that takes more than a tap loses people.

HearBack builds this for you: the Manage tab shows a QR code and link for each location, and can send it to a customer by email or text.

When and how to ask

  • In person, at the moment they say thank you. It is the most natural time.
  • By text or email within a day, while the visit is fresh.
  • On a QR code at the counter, on the receipt, on the table or on the invoice.
  • By making it routine for your team, so it does not depend on who remembers.
In person
I'm glad that worked out. If you have a minute, a Google review really helps a small business like ours. I can send you the link right now if that's easier.
Text message

The rules that keep reviews honest

  • Never offer discounts, freebies or anything else in exchange for a review, a changed review or a removed one. Google treats this as fake and misleading content and prohibits it.
  • Ask everyone. If you only ask the customers you expect to be happy, your reviews stop reflecting real experience, which is what Google asks reviews to do.
  • Do not write reviews of your own business or ask friends and family to post them.
  • Do not buy reviews. Fake reviews break Google's policies and can get your listing penalized.

Then reply to the reviews you get

Replying shows future customers that a real person is listening, and it makes people who left a review feel heard. Keep replies short and personal, and start with the negative ones. Our guide on responding to negative Google reviews has a structure and templates.
